Writing in Your Second Language? How to Read an AI Writing Flag Calmly
AI detection report literacy matters most when the stakes feel personal. Multilingual writers often lean on clear, conventional academic phrasing—and that kind of regular, low-surprise English can overlap with what AI classifiers treat as “predictable.”
Core point
A yellow highlight on an AI writing report is an estimate about one upload, not a finding about you. False positives on non-native English are a recognized concern, so the flag deserves careful reading, not panic and not a blind rewrite.
Five calm steps
Open the full AI writing report for the matching upload—skip the cropped percentage card.
Note which continuous paragraphs are highlighted and whether they are formulaic sections (abstract, methods, transitions).
Gather process evidence: version history, outlines, dated notes.
Check your institution’s policy on grammar checkers and translators; disclose if required.
Ask whether revision is actually required. If it is, stay document-level: edit flagged passages in the real file and keep citations and layout intact. No honest tool can guarantee the next digit.
If you have been asked to revise
Once a rewrite of flagged passages is decided on a matching Turnitin or iThenticate AI report, you can use HumanPen to work through only those passages inside your DOCX / PPTX / TXT—no score promises attached.
